Fruits Rich in Calcium

Parathyroid hormone and calcitonin (one of the hormones made by the thyroid gland) have key roles in regulating the amount of calcium in the blood and within the bones.
Calcium is the only mineral in the body that has a group of glands entirely responsible for controlling it within our blood, and the parathyroid glands do this continuously. A hormone called calcitonin is secreted by the thyroid gland and works in conjunction with parathyroid hormone, or PTH. Parathyroid Hormone takes from the bones to top up the level in the blood stream. When the level is adequate, it stops making the hormone, but when there is calcium deficiency, it will start to take from your bones. Calcitonin works to reduce the amount of calcium your body takes from its own bones.
For healing bones or good bone health in general, it is important to include foods high in calcium (fruits being the most powerful) and I do not recommend milk or dairy. 10 fruits rich in calcium include oranges, dried figs, rhubarb and dates. Read more.

Why are you drinking milk?

There are many claims that milk/dairy is good for our bodies, supposedly by providing us with Vitamin D and calcium. However, fruits give us as much or more calcium and vitamin D as they claim milk provides, and animal milk is not actually digestible by our bodies. After the age of 2, humans lose the enzymes needed to digest milk. It is clear that it is not meant for human consumption after this age. It makes no sense to take milk from an animal (such as a cow) that has produced it for her calves. Even worse, most farmers separate the cows from their calves and continue to repeatedly milk the cows for mass production. The only kind of milk that babies should be consuming is their mother's milk.

It is also important to take into consideration the negative effects of animal milk. Cow's milk has up to 200 times the safe levels measurable quantities of herbicides, pesticides, dioxins and up to 52 powerful antibiotics, blood, pus, feces, bacteria and viruses. Cow's milk can have traces of anything the cow ate, including radioactive fallout from nuke testing. If you don't find this disturbing, you are not very concerned for your health or the well being of others.

Milk causes mucus build up in our bodies because it cannot be digested and when the body builds up acids, it forms deficiencies and toxicities known as 'diseases'. Why would we want to put indigestible milk that does not in fact provide us with calcium and vitamin D inside our bodies, when we can get the calcium and vitamin D from living foods such as fruits and vegetables. Milk does not do a body good.

"Neither vitamins, minerals nor hormones can do any work - without enzymes." - Dr. Edward Howell

Anyone know of any dairy farmers who switched from producing milk to growing fruits and vegetables as an alternative, so they can still be farmers and not have to give up their livelihood? I would love to share those stories!

Picking Apples In September

Back in September, we drove up to Avalon Orchards for some organic apple picking! We love the opportunity to pick our own organic fruits. Freshly picked (raw and ripe) fruits contain energy that can heal the human body. Organic apples have proven to decrease oxidation of cell membrane fats. This is important in our cardiovascular system since oxidation of fat in the membranes of cells, is a primary risk factor for cardiovascular problems. Avalon Orchards is a Certified Organic Apple orchard located in Innisfil, Ontario. Avalon Orchards apples and apple cider is available at Trinity Bellwoods Farmer's market on Tuesdays.

Get Away From All This Crap

The power of berries prevent nerve related degeneration and enhance the neuroplasticity of cells, the transmission of nerve signals and calcium buffering functions.
Below is a snippet from Dr. Robert Morse's latest Q&A video where he responds to the concerns of a health provider, asking about a Nestle formula used on a patient with neurological problems.
"There is not a manufacturer out there that can make a living food formula for people with neurological injuries that is going to help them. None of these formulas is worth a crap. You have to have living foods, living vibrational energetics with chemistry that is put together as 'God' did it. You can not use anything man makes, and most formulas are not built as carbon, but as protein and nitrogen based - high fat high nitrogen. Carbon and oxygen are the fuel of life. These pre-made formulas are way out of balance chemically, and cause mucus to develop in people. There is a huge difference between a formula and a bowl of fruit, in terms of energetics and in the ability to clean, heal and regenerate the human body. I don't care what you do...

Strawberries and Cherries For June

What's in season in Ontario for June? Strawberries and cherries! Strawberries and cherries (amongst others) are fruits that have the most magnetics and astringents. Magnetism heals the human body. The Earth is one of the largest natural sources of magnetic wave energy. The body's magnetism comes from the earth's own magnetic field and from the magnetism produced through metabolism. Astringents are substances of a chemical compound that has a 'binding' action on tissue, that result in wound healing and conditions of the digestive system. They are used as remedies. During the summer we try to eat 90- 100% raw. We have started off our summer enjoying some local organic strawberries and cherries. They help hydrate the body and provide nutrition to feed the blood and cure 'disease'.

Living Foods - Banana Nut Muffins (dehydrated and live with enzymes)

Living foods are raw foods (vegan) that contains enzymes, vitamins, and minerals that the body needs to heal and maintain optimal health. The 2 types of enzymes in our bodies are digestive and metabolic enzymes. Digestive enzymes digest food and metabolic enzymes carry out our body's functions. The digestive and metabolic enzymes in our bodies are in competition with each other. When we eat more raw food (live with enzymes), the digestive enzyme potential in our bodies does not have to be used for digesting, and so allows the metabolic enzymes, that run our body and keeps all organs and tissues working properly, to rebuild new and healthy cells. On the other hand, when we eat cooked foods, digestive enzymes are needed to digest these dead foods, which also accumulate in the body for years and become acidic causing disease. The constant use of digestive enzymes slows down the use of metabolic enzymes which in turn, slow down our healing/regenerating process that prevents us from maintaining optimal health.
We love our dehydrator and have recently come up with a recipe for 'Living Banana Nut Muffins'. All the ingredients used contain enzymes and have not been cooked. Our nuts were sprouted and we used fresh shredded coconut along with dried dates for added sweetness. We also topped them off with some raw cacao nibs. We absolutely loved the results and felt they tasted just like baked banana nut muffins! See recipe below.

Picking Apples at Avalon Orchards

Eating freshly picked ripe fruits is the healthiest way to consume food. When we learned about Avalon Orchards, a certified organic apple orchard in Innisfil Ontario, we decided to check it out. We were assisted by friendly people and a serene atmosphere. On arrival to the orchard, we parked by a beautiful sunflower patch and then explored the grounds (where a tee-pee sits). Our walk through the (dwarf) apple trees was amazing- it's not often you can walk along and pick organic apples and eat them on the spot! Once we filled our bag with 'Freedom' and 'Novamac' apples, we headed back into the barn where we were kindly offered a small drink of fresh apple cider. Avalon Orchards apple cider is available at Farmer's market around the city, including Trinity Bellwoods park. We enjoy drinking it hot and cold and also incorporate it into our salads as a vinaigrette. We recommend you give it a try!

Guacamole In A Pattypan (Summer Squash)

Summer squash time has arrived! Summer and winter squash are good sources of vitamins A and E, and potassium. They are rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Summer is the best time for eating raw foods such as fruit vegetables (squashes) and fruits. Check out our recipe for 'Guacamole in a Pattypan' - they make great appetizers. Enjoy!

A Citrus Passion

Citrus fruits contain citric acid which has an alkalizing effect when consumed and aids in both the production of digestive juices and the process of digestion. They have additional antioxidant constituents - including Vitamin C. For the past couple of weeks, we've prepared a citrus fruit juice made with freshly squeezed grapefruit, oranges, lemon and lime. It's a healthy and energetic way to start the day!  Chemistry has two sides - acidic/corrosive and alkaline/base. It's important to maintain a blood PH level between 7.35 and 7.45 in order to have a healthy body. Alkalizing our bodies will heal us and balance our PH levels. Enjoy our recipe below!

Tomato Hors d'oeuvres

Tomatoes are fruit vegetables that are high in antioxidants. They have an excellent amount of vitamin C and beta carotene. Tomatoes are best eaten raw because if they are cooked, they become too acidic. Although they are acidic raw, they have an alkalizing effect once consumed. Since they have the ability to alkalize the blood, they are recommended for keeping a balanced PH level. Eating organic tomatoes are healthier than non-organic since the lack of pesticides allow them to strengthen their own natural defenses - increasing antioxidant levels. On average, fruits and vegetables that are grown organically contain higher levels of vitamins and minerals! For our latest (detox) recipe, we made some Tomato Hors d'oeuvres topped with fresh homemade pesto and alfalfa sprouts. You can try out a spicy version of this recipe as well. Enjoy!

'All theory, dear friend, is gray, but the golden tree of life springs ever green'

Greens are healthy any time! Part of the detox process involves cutting down on most foods except for your fruits and salads. For 3 weeks now, we have been 100% raw! Until we complete our detox, our breakfasts will consist of fruits such as berries and melons. Our lunches and dinner will include salads and zucchini pasta. Eating raw fresh fruits, along with fruit vegetables such as zucchini and red pepper - and greens and herbs - are tasty, healthy and easier to prepare than cooked foods. We'll be sharing a variety of salad recipes in the upcoming posts. Enjoy our recipe below for Raw Zucchini Spaghetti With Spinach Pesto and topped with cayenne pepper (for detox support). This is the easiest dinner to make!

Berries And Melons, Greens And Herbs - Cleanse Follow Up

For seven months now, we have been grain-free. It's been almost one year now that we began an 80% raw food diet, two years of going dairy free and three years of eating organic food. We experienced symptoms such as bloating - which forced us to cut out more food and continue to change our diet. We learned the importance of the lymphatic system - the body's sewer system. If we aren't draining the lymphatic system then it doesn't matter that you are eating raw vegetables. Vegetables are actually lower in nutrition and harder to digest than fruits (raw or cooked). This was the cause of our bloating - as well as water. When our bodies are unhealthy, we are too acidic. When you are acidic, water will only bloat you and not be able to hydrate you. Too much water can actually fill in the lungs causing further problems! We'll be writing an upcoming post about the water myth - based on our knowledge and experience.

We are now hydrating with fruits (as well as 1-2 glasses of lemon water daily) and have felt a dramatic change in doing so. The chemistry of berries and melons are best for lymphatic congestion. Fruits such as berries and melons hydrate the body and provide nutrition to feed the blood while moving the lymphatic system. We have started a more 'Fruitarian' diet (including fruit vegetables such as cucumbers, tomatoes and avocados) with some greens and herbs. Based on our experiences so far, we find fruits to be the most pleasurable way to deal with cleansing. We have limited the use of Bentonite Clay - although we feel it is still safe to use. If you choose to try Bentonite Clay, check for bloating. Bentonite Clay expands and if you are not digesting properly, it will bloat you, which is a sign of acidity. Discontinue use if bloating or constipation occurs and focus on moving lymph with fruits.

Since acids are responsible for all health problems, it is important to alkalize. Although lemons are acidic fruits, they have a high alkaline mineral content which has an alkalizing effect on the body. To cleanse and maintain health, we need to have an acid/alkaline balance. We live in an alkali base planet and you need to maintain a balance of acidity and alkalinity, otherwise you will not survive on this planet and will gain 'diseases' at a later time when your body may not be able to handle it- depending on your state of acidity. Proteins should be avoided during cleanses and exercising should be kept to a minimal because it is not safe to put your organs to work while they are clearly not functioning properly. When we exercise in an acidic (unhealthy) state, we create more acids that must be released from the body or else will accumulate to create 'diseases'. We must first clean our bodies in order to become healthy.

"We are living beings requiring living foods, but we aren't just living vertebrae, we are homosapian vertebrae - meaning we are the highest neurological species on the planet - in every way, shape and form; therefore we must consume energetics equivalent to that (which is your fruits and your berries and melons)" - Dr. Robert Morse

Homemade Apple Cinnamon Muesli

Cinnamon has anti-fungal, antibacterial and anti-parasitic properties! For breakfast, we decided to make homemade Apple Cinnamon Muesli with hemp seeds. There is something pleasant about the smell of warm cinnamon and apple. We dehydrated all our ingredients in our conventional oven, after 24 hours of pre-soaking them in water. Try our recipe below over the weekend (or prepare muesli the evening before) and enjoy the aroma of apple and cinnamon while they dehydrate. All enzymes remain active once ready, so it is a healthy treat!

Happy Egg Pancakes

We love eggs! Our eggs come from happy free range, drug free chickens, at a local Ontario farm. We cook our eggs in different ways, but we recently learned that there are benefits to eating raw eggs, specially the yolk. According to the Food Chemistry journal, the yolk has twice as many antioxidant properties as an apple! They are rich in carotenoid antioxidant compounds, which is why their color is yellow. We created an egg pancake recipe that we topped off with a raw egg yolk (see recipe below). If you buy your eggs from local organic farms, you should give it a try!
Below: Egg pancake topped with a raw yolk for antioxidants and a refreshing bowl of watermelon (drizzled with a little honey) for additional antioxidants and nutrients! Eat watermelon 20 minutes prior to eating egg pancakes.

Spicy Mango Salad

Other than cold soups, salads are another great option for raw food ideas. One of our favorite salads is the Spicy Thai Mango Salad. The mix of spicy, sweet and sour makes it a flavorful meal! Our salad was made with all raw ingredients including red onion, cilantro, garlic, ginger and lettuce with a mix of spice! Very tasty and energetic!

A Raw Menu

Over the weekend, we decided to eat strictly raw meals! So far, the only issue we seem to have with raw foods is tolerating the strength of raw onions, raw garlic and raw ginger. We created recipes that would create a milder taste (from the power of raw onions) by incorporating plenty of vegetables and coconut cream. The food tasted amazing! It consisted of appetizers, a main course and double desserts (recipe for ice-cream is available at the bottom of the post, Gazpacho recipe coming soon...). Enjoy!

'We're all spiritual, electrical, unlimited beings.'

Quote By: Lou Corona
Fresh, raw foods and cultured/fermented foods have energy in them! According to Lou Corona, when food is cooked at 105 degrees, the enzymes (energy) begin to die. Once food is cooked past 118°, the life energy is gone! Once the life energy of food is gone, we can still gain some nutrition but we have to use more of our own energy to digest the food, which in turn drains our life source - the enzymes in our body! So basically, we can gain energy from raw foods instead of wasting energy trying to digest stubborn foods! We've decided to eat more raw foods to experiment and find out if we need to go completely raw.
Other than our ice-cream recipes (coming soon), we haven't prepared much raw desserts so we got inspired by this Cherry Tart recipe. There is also a similar recipe here. Both look amazing! We slightly modified the original recipe and created our own 'Nut- free Cherry Tart' recipe! You definitely feel energized after eating raw foods, which includes smoothies and vegetable juices. Our recipe is a good choice for people who presently have nut allergies. Enjoy!

Crêpes Two Ways

Pre-soaking flour overnight is important in order to break down enzyme inhibitors so nutrients can become available for us to have, making it easier to digest. This applies to gluten free flour as well. We decided to put this into practice and pre-soaked some flour for 24 hours. We chose to make two types of crêpes - fruit and vegetable. For the fruit crêpes, we added strawberries, honey and pre-soaked nuts after baking the crêpes. For the vegetable recipe, we decided to make red onion, garlic and zucchini crêpes that we baked in the oven with the ingredients. Two different flavors and both very tasty! (see recipe for plain crêpes below)

The Benefits Of Dehydrated and Fermented Foods

Dehydration is one of the oldest methods of food preservation known to man. The history of dehydrated food includes dried fish, Chinese tea leaves and preserved fruit, vegetables and meat. Today it is still put into practice and is beneficial for your health. Not only does it preserve food so it is readily available but it also provides the enzymes and nutrients you need for a healthy immune system. Food fermentation is also very beneficial for the immune system because it provides healthy bacteria to the gut flora which can fight against bacteria, viruses and 'diseases'.

Making Yeast Water

While researching the internet for information on creating yeast, we came across an amazing blog that shows you how to make yeast water. We decided this was going to be the method for making yeast that we will use in our first gluten free bread loaf recipe. We're very excited! We placed dried figs, dried prunes and some honey in our glass jar. Hopefully the results will be successful!
Below: Our latest addition to our fermenting family - dried fruit yeast water!

7 hours later... The figs began to float to the top of the jar. According to Wao, the fruit should begin to rise during this process. So far so good!

And later on... we are officially addicted to fermenting and decided to also try Wao's tea leaf yeast water! We only had organic red rooibos tea leaves available, so that's what we used. Hopefully it works out. (see image below)
